House of the Ixcaco Flowers

House of the Ixcaco Flowers

In the highlands of San Juan La Laguna, Guatemala, the women of the Flor de Ixcaco Weavers Collective carry forward an ancient Mayan tradition. This film by Nick Simon follows their intricate process of creating blouses, blankets, and garments entirely by hand— from harvesting cotton and spinning thread, to dyeing with natural plants and weaving on the traditional backstrap loom.

Founded and led by 38 Indigenous Mayan women, the collective is more than an artisan group— it is a cultural movement. By preserving traditional weaving methods, they protect a living lineage, strengthen their community, and ensure that the knowledge of their ancestors will not be lost to time.
