Sampouna – The Ancient Sound of Mykonos

Sampouna – The Ancient Sound of Mykonos

This short film by Jasmine Orozco follows Marios, a 17-year-old musician from Mykonos who handcrafts the island’s traditional sampouna, an ancient Greek bagpipe made from goat skin, reed pipes, and hand-carved wooden parts. The film captures his meticulous process—from preparing and shaping the hide to tuning the double pipes—and shows how he brings the instrument to life through song and dance in his local community.

As one of the island’s youngest practitioners, Marios is helping preserve a centuries-old sound and cultural tradition. Through his music, gatherings, and performances, he keeps the spirit of Mykonos alive for a new generation.
