Skirts, Swords, and Freedom
Skirts, Swords, and Freedom
In the rare and fragile window of post-war Syria, this documentary by filmmaker Osama Al-Khalaf offers a unique glimpse into a country rebuilding itself through its enduring cultural heritage. At its heart is Sadouj, an ancient Syrian craft of intricate wood inlay, masterfully preserved by Mohamed Issa. Using delicate hand-carved pieces of mother-of-pearl, bone, and fine wood, Issa revives a tradition that once flourished in Damascus, now at risk of being lost. As he painstakingly assembles each pattern, his work becomes more than just art—it is a testament to resilience, survival, and the unbreakable spirit of a people reclaiming their history.
